GENERIC DRUGS VS. BIG BRANDS

There are name brands that we choose because we see them on TV, Ads or the newspapers, and magazine. We feel that we know what they will do for us, and what kind of illness we actually have.

Name brands have a patent that will last for about 20 years. Generics have not done the research, and can sell the medicine after the patent has expired. That is partly the reason of the reduced cost. The pill or medicine is not similar to the brand name. It is also a savings to the consumer. Just how effective the pill or medicine is, as opposed to the brand is still a debate.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does say that the effects are the same, and it might have something to do with the dosage. Also there are different kinds of generic drugs. There are the equivalent, and the alternative. If it is the equivalent it will be as effective as the name brand.

Most of us as consumers are concerned that we get get well with the medication. If we paid $95.00 for a prescription and found out that the generic only cost $20.00, we would have a choice. If we were on a fixed income, we would probably not be able to pay more. If we had children, we would be more cost conscience, and want to save our money. Or, if you had to purchase other medication you would shop more wisely.

SUMMARY

Check with your physician when he or she writes out the prescription, or with your druggist. They can explain what you are getting and the effects of the medication.

Don't make judgments from the Ad or TV advertising, consult with the experts, on your health and illness.
