GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL & GET ASSOCIATE DEGREE TOGETHER

If you are a good high school student and want a challenge you need to enroll in a Dual Credit Course. You can enroll in a hands on technician career. Or, enroll in office works with other high school students. What you can do with the credits is to transfer to a four year college or university.

The accreditation is from Career Education Association of North Central Illinois (CEANCI), the High School Connections provides services and support to enroll students in college courses for Dual Credit. This curriculum is offered through Rock Valley College. The counselors at the high school are the ones coordinating the program, and working with RVC (Rock Valley College).

The program is called Running Start and it is for qualified students for the area high schools to earn both their high school diploma and Associates of Arts Degree at the same time. The students would attend both their high school and Rock Valley College. The students would be in the program starting their junior and senior years. There must be an agreement between the schools and RVC, it is administrated through the High School Connections.

In order to be enrolled the student must be academically and socially ready for college and a dual high school curriculum. They can also maintain their current program at high school, such as sports or government. A major advantage of the dual credit program is the cost. The student would not have to pay for the 2 years of attendance at RVC, however they are required to provide their own books. The students are shortening their college time by 2 years to earn their 4 year degree.

The program costs $5,000 per student, and that is paid by the State of Illinois for each student.

Parents are encouraging their children to get involved in the Running Start Program. I taught at a local high school's biology class and quite a few of the students were participating in the program. They were very excited with the dual studies and seem to be doing very well, with their grades.

Rock Valley College is approximately 90 miles north of Chicago, IL. The small campus is beautiful and the surrounding neighborhood is above the upper middle class homes. They have a lot of Associate Degree Programs and the students have been successful in their transferring to a 4 year colleges.

SUMMARY

In order to get into the program the student must have a 3.0 GPA and RVC has 28 degree programs that award associate degrees. There are 60 course areas that would lead to four year degrees.

The College is located at:

Rockford Valley College - 3301 North Mulford Road - Rockford, IL 61114 - (815) 921-7821 or (800) 973-7821

Thaanks Sherrylou57, I hope that the word gets out and other colleges will do the same for their students. We are in the jet age and need to move along faster. I wish that this would have been available when my kids went to school!
